Looking Back: Kino #6

August 13, 2007

Kino 6 Flyer

Kino #6 took place Monday August 13th at the lovely Chalkhorse gallery in Surry Hills, welcoming 80 film makers and film watchers, regulars and new faces...

Andy Smith (aka There Aren't Any Sheep in Mongolia) kicked things off with a couple a great live songs.

MC Marianne then quickly got down to business with the first film of the evening, which happened to be... hers: the philosophical and whimsical Happiness! Nope, she didn't cheat, titles are pulled out of a hat at Kino, ensuring the running order stays a secret until the very end.

It was followed by The Populist Adventures of Jesus, by neon animator Jack Feldstein. It's Jack's fourth film for Kino, and it proved to be a hilarious crowd-pleaser. Can he make it five our of five? Find out at Kino 7 in September!

Next was a film made at Kino Manchester (a.k.a. Filmonik) entitled Less Than Sober. Jamie had once again filmed a video intro to the film, specially recorded for our Sydney audience. This continues our popular Jamie Kennerley retrospective, started with Boy and Guitar, Modern Folk and Stolen.

Shot in two days but in post for much longer, The Consulate was Matthew Joyce's action-packed new film, which he presented alongside lead actor Ilya Morelle (TV's Alias).

At the break our generous open bar served mulled wine (we *heart* winter), our favourite beer - Kokanee -, sushi and pastries. We also gave away double passes to the upcoming silent comedy by Australian master Rolf de Heer, Dr Plonk.

Andy Smith performed some more after the break, with guest vocals from the lovely Laura.

Last month an audience member requested a filmmaking challenge. The crowd was only too happy to oblige and suggested a theme: "horny blind girl". When it became evident that said audience member would not deliver, Caitlin Hanvey (and friends) stepped up to the plate and shot Horny Blind Girl in a single afternoon, proving that no challenge should remain unanswered. THE big laugh of the night... must be seen to be believed.

The audience was keen to present someone else with a challenge, and it was Linton Langford who courageously accepted. He now has to shoot a "western" involving the "colonization of a new planet" in time for Kino #7 next month. We're with you 100% Linton!

Another challenge doing the rounds at the moment in the Choose Your Own Adventure film: The Magic Dice. Nils Crompton made Episode 1 for Kino #5. Eddie and Sumen, from Kino Adelaide made Episode 2, which we screened at Kino #6. Each time, the audience votes for the direction the next episode should take, from a multiple choice question at the end og the segemnt. Luke Simmonds volunteered to shoot Episode 3 (with the help of Lego-Man) in time for Kino #7 - may the Force be with you, Luke!

Next up was a film made at Kino Montreal by Jennyfer Bourassin. Charade is a beautiful hand-painted animation which truly shows the range of possibilities offered to Kino filmmakers.

Finally, Luke Simmonds presented a film directed by brother Dan (unfortunately absent) in which they both perform: Strings Attached featured hot new music by Kino regulars Meat Pig

Altogether it was a great night brimming with creativity and high spirits... don't just take my word for it...!
